Hello Janet,

I was wondering if you could email me about TESL. I am thinking about getting a master in TESOL bc/ I would like to move to yemen. Would I be able to support a large family with a career move like that (Working in yemen)?

Hi, In brief, No. At length, it would be difficult unless your family speaks Arabic. Financially, you could probably pay for an apartment and basic food. You could dress simply and wear the inexpensive Chinese import shoes and clothes. Your kids would have to go to Arabic schools and I am not sure they could. If they are not permitted to attend local schools, that would mean home schooling or private schools which are very expensive. Getting a job in the NGO field is more promising. Or, hav ing a teaching certificate and working at the International School in Sana'a might be possible. Please write me directly if you want: teacherai@hotmail.com

furthermore, if you want to work in the Arab world, your best best would be a year or two in Saudi Arabia. Most universities in KSA pay at least 32,000 a year. Schools in Yemen (except the International School in Sana'a) pay maybe 1,000 a month and most would NOT provide an apartment large enough for your family.

That is really a great effort, Janet. I am a Yemeni Fulbright student in the U.S. I really enjoyed reading your blog. I am interested in building mutual cutural understanding between Yemenis and the American people. I would be happy if I could possibly work with you towards fulfilling this goal.

My email address is ammaralhawi@gmail.com

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ammar
